what is eating my tomato stem?? HELP!

Hi.. i' new to this forum... but have been reading it for a long time... great source of info! Can anyone please help me identify what is eating my tomato stems??

I just can out one morning and found the stem nearly eaten all the way through... and the little buggers have started on the higher stems... please help!

Response on the other tomato forum suggested slugs or snails. Do you have those in your area?

hi jean,
yes, i've had snails and slugs coming to my tomatoes... it's just rained so they're out in force... i never realised that the snails and slugs crawled so high just to eat the stems... i always thought they were ground dwellers... :)
