Preparing Beds for Next Year

This was my first year with a SFG (or garden in general). I had mixed results. Cucumbers, squash and melons did well. Tomatoes, peppers and broccoli hobbled along without much growth.

My guess is that there must be something in the soil that the cucumber family likes. I am using Mel's Mix.

I have two questions ...

1. A lot of the soil in the beds has settled -- as much as 50%. Should I just fill with more compost or more mix?

2. Is there some augmentation that is beneficial to tomatoes and peppers that I can try for next year?
