When do you divide Bearded Irises?

16 years ago

I've but recently returned to TN and wondering about the optimum time to divide and move irises here. July is when I've done it before, but I confess reluctance to do it in this heat. And who knows when the weather will break? What say you? Bite the bullet and do it now? Wait till September? I'm digging up some of my Momma's and it would kill me to lose them. Still, I think of irises as indestructible. I need a reality check.

(My impatience has nothing to do with the big empty spots in the front border awaiting irises, nothing at all.)
