Growing Gourds

I am always well blessed with Gourds from Norm at the Middle TN swap. Now I've had another gardening friend gift me with some. For those of you who grow gourds, after you dry them, what is the best way to clean them so you can do things with them like crafts and birdhouses ?

I use a strong solution of bleach in water (kills the fungus)and I scrub it with a steel wool pad. Still waiting
for Jan to teach me the art work.
