Maggie.. from what I hear there are a number of plumeria growers there and close by.... as well as growers across the country.. Michigan and up into Canada.. if they can get them to flower in thooes conditions.. it should be real easy for you... I grow them here in NYC.. and they are the most fun and challenging in my rooftop garden as anything might be.. but I love them and wouldn't give them up for any number of marigolds or peteunias.. give it a try..there's lots of help out there for ya.. Gordon
Well, the ones in Canada and NYC are obviously in pots. I think you are interested in growing them in the ground. If you have a real protected courtyard or overhang with some sun, you might have reasonable success, but they are more than frost-sensitive, they are cold-sensitive. I see them defoliate in San Diego when it drops to 40F or the high 30s even if it is not frosty. But they do grow back beautifully around May.
Plumeria, even in the tropics, aren't evergreen as far as I know. I lived some years in the Caribbean and the frangipani worms, giant striped monsters 5" long and 3/4" across, would competely strip ours periodically. Their droppings would be deposited around the tree, and after they would totaly strip the trees, they would remain dormant until a rainy period began. Then the trees would bust forth, covered in blooms but with nary a leaf upon them. The cycle would then repeat itself.
