I haven't seen very much consideration on this topic, so I'd like to hear what you think/have.

I have an "L" shaped raised planter in my backyard that wraps around a gas fire pit with red lava rock. I'd like to have a "clean" look for groundcover under the palms & hibiscus. Although not necessarily tropical, I would think Irish moss would create a neat color contrast to a few sections of red lava "flows". Any other ideas?
