We experienced over a foot of snow last winter here in Oregon. It stuck on the ground for about 2 weeks and I thought there was a strong possibility that my 3 palms would die. Alas, they continue to grow ... usually having 3 new spears showing at all times.

But, this summer the new leaves are showing "bands of yellow" midway up the leaves ... about 3 inches long on every new leaf ... on every tree! Picture each new palm having a 3" yellow band on every leaf forming semi-circle shape from pinky to thumb. It acutally adds a little flavor to the otherwise green palms.

Once the new spears begin to separate to their classic "windmill" shape the yellow band sections seem to cause the leafs to stick together a little longer than the remaining sections, but do finally separtate.

They are watered via a drip system with pretty good drainage ... they're planted behind a retaining rock wall. I fertilize them in late spring with some "palm specific" water soliable fertilizer. I sprinkled some epsom salts around their bases about a month ago ... as I usually do every year.

I'm wondering if that snowy, cold period during the winter caused this.

An inquiring mind would like to know what you think.
