Here, in the Atlanta area, landscapers commonly rotate stock at customer sites. An easy way to do that is to have the large pots reserve the space needed for the plants.

yes, I use a very similar method. It works great if your trying to get a feeling for how the plants would look in different locations. and of course so you can bring them inside without digging them up

I use that method with my cannas because the love water and they are easy to bring inside for the winter.

And I use it here in Jacksonville, Florida for my plumerias. They cannot survive the occasional winter freezes. Even though they are short and random, the plumeria won't live. So I use pot in pot and bring them into the garage in the winter.

I have noticed that it is very common method in Florida - and I actually saw somebody post pictures of their vegtable garden using pot in pot - it had something to do with the soil. That was what started to get me thinking - I know a lot of people bury plants in pots, but that just seemed like it would be too much work. I have recently noticed that Patio Plants dot com suggests using the pot in pot method for palms in northern ares.
