moving butterfly bush

I have a lrg butterfly bush that is not exactly where I want it. Can I move it? when should I do it? I thought after I cut it back in the spring might be my best bet. Thanks for your help!

my ground is still frozen and under snow....
I move all my stuff when I want (or have to save them from my dh doing a project on my latest garden site) just a little extra tlc after...
but best time is fall. early spring shouldnt hurt it but dont expect it to be as beautiful (super early spring move is better than later)

I moved my large butterfly bush a few years ago when I spring pruned it with no ill effect. It was tough to get out though. I did dig a large circle around it, but the roots went out far. So I had to do a lot of root cutting, but as I said it didn't bother it.

I moved mine in the early spring also, when the soil was soft enough to dig it out. I think we cut down the dead wood and trimmed it as best as possible.

We had one small root left behind and, amazingly enough, it actually grew and we have a small little bush. So this year we'll have to move it.

The prospects are harrowing; the accomplishment is gratifying. And so easy. I move my Buddleias 2 or 3 times at a swoop with no ill effects (...oops, another 4" to the right...).

Do it after you prune before or as it buds (before is safer). Dig wide, of course, to get all the roots (if you can), and replant at same depth. Water in well, and keep moist for a couple of weeks.

What are your favorite companion plants for B. davidii?

    Hi,
I have moved mine in the past, I recommend moving them as soon as your ground is ready to be dug, Before growth starts, I will be digging a yellow from my Mom's house we are thinking mid April, She's 74 so I tend to believe what she tells me, remember to keep it well watered, :)Anita
