I grow all kinds of Canna in South Wales, by East Aurora. they are grown in raised beds that can dry out quickly and still get 5 feet tall.

There are all kinds of them out there these days.

Pam: Good to hear! I was afraid they might not like the drier soil. I am sooo looking forward to growing them this year. Would love to see photos of yours in your garden if you have photos you don't mind sharing.

BTW- I love East Aurora. Such a quaint town. The houses have so much character!!

I started to grow them from seed via wintersowing 2 yrs. ago. They were awsome. Mine grow in a slightly raised lasagna bed with lots of compost to hold the moisture I also grow some in large containers and just set the pot down inside a larger container that has water in it so I don't have to water them as much. Some of mine got about 6 or 7 ft. tall last year. I like growing them from seed since I don't have a reliable place to store the rhizomes over the winter to keep them from freezing.

The ones in the red bed are in nice rich soil and they grew like weeds to 7 feet tall. You could almost see them grow. It was a VERY dry summer, and I only watered about once a month. In the past, I grew them in clay with very little water. They grew happily enough, but slower and topped out around 5 feet, and not so wide. So they will grow anywhere, they are really tough plants, but a little extra water will encourage faster bigger growth. And mulch of course, mulch keeps their roots happy and moister.

They are so easy, for winter I just throw them in a bushel basket in the cellar. Have fun with these tropical beauties.

Oh this is very encouraging! I'm glad to hear that they don't need to be pampered. I can't wait to try them this year.

Faltered, I have millions of tubers if you'd like some, they multiply like crazy. Ok maybe not millions but you get the idea.
