I don't grow poppies myself but quite a few people do grow them and a lot of people here wintersow them. The ones that are wintersown are really tough little plants and are usually one of the earlier seeds to germinate and be planted out. Normally people here consider Memorial Week-end as the planting kick-off date but hardier plants can be planted out much sooner. Last year I was planting out my seedlings in late March and early April. Hopefully someone who does grow them here will post a reply. I think lblack grows poppies.

They will bolt if the pot is too small or if it gets hot. Usually if you get them out there before it gets warm, they will do fine. Last year I grew annual poppies and started them about month before my last frost, then put them out immediately after the last frost date. That was plenty of time for them to bloom normally before it got hot. They are fast plants to mature. This year I will be growing some and I have not started them yet. Probably won't until the end of the month at the earliest. Depends on how warm this month is.
