Question about Pinapple Sage (Salvia)

Hi All!

I tried a little search but I didn't come up with anything and I'm sure I could get my info here just as good and quick.

I was asked today about the Salvia Plant Pineapple Sage. The question was "Did I know if this Salvia Plant detracted Mosquitoes?"

I don't grow Salvia, so does anyone know or have experience using for this purpose. I once heard Geraniums are a good deterrent. Is that by chance also true?

As we know there are many more good things that get rid of pesky bugs and this individual has a real serious problem with mosquitoes (as many do.)

I think it's great he would want to use or try a natural means of warding off rather than toxic sprays. Plus the Salvia Plant is much more beneficial or more than likely longer lasting if this method is true. So your help would be greatly appreciated.

I just finished getting 2/3 of my Dahlias out of winter storage and into a soil medium a little while ago. YIPPEE! It's now 12:46 PM and I had been at it since 06:30 this morning. What's the opposite of YIPPEE!, without being to negative?

Here is the scoop on Pinaeapple sage....no it will not repel mosquitos. There are a few plants that will IF and I repeat IF the leaves are crushed and rubbed on the skin, Cintronell geranium is one Lemon thyme and Lemon grass are two more but the effects are very short lived. Pineapple sage is wonderful to use in iced tea or fruit drinks in the summer or to garnish deserts as the scent is wonderful and when they finally bloom in September the hummers will use the nectar if they are still around. Other than that it is a huge salvia growing anywhere from 3 to 5 ft. tall and 2 -3 ft. wide but unfortunately it isn't hardy here and will succumb to the first hard frost.

I have also heard that fresh catnip rubbed on the skin will repel mosquitoes. Also, fresh beauty berry leaves. I haven't had much luck with it though. We use a natural bug spray by Green Spiral called Quit Bugging Me. Keeps gnats away too!
