It's hard to kill bee balm, which is a relative of the mint family. I usually cut mine back in the fall. It's a little early to expect much of it. I haven't really looked the past few days, but I don't think mine is doing much at this stage, either, and I don't think it usually does.

Bee balm tends to run along the ground. It sends surface roots downward and stems upward. Sometimes those roots will heave out of the soil in the winter. I've lost some that way.

Mines not up yet, and as hammerl said, it's hard to kill. When did you plant it? As long as it had time enough to settle in before winter, I would not worry about it. And if by chance it did pass on, there's got to be someone you know that will give you some, most of us that have it, have an overabundance.

Bee balm's stems die over winter. If you look at the ground and dig around there, you'll find the nice, juicy roots. New shoots will grow from those. Mine are still asleep. You don't have to do anything to prep for winter.

Thanks all. I'll wait until summer to worry about the poor little thing. Lord knows I can kill a flower with just one look. It is really pretty sad. I usually stick to vegetables & fruits and an annual here and there. My bee balm was so cute and over mothered last summer.

Mine stays green all winter at the crown if it doesn't stay too wet and if it gets protection . This year I have just a little green showing but I can tell that it is spreading as I see leaves in areas that were not planted last year. In fact I have a saliva that I can
t dig up because the bee balm is coming up around the base of the dead salvia. I will just have to let the root of the salvia rot in the ground.
