How about organic soil (with NO Miracle Gro)?? I recommend these 2 local products: McEnroe ($3.99 to 4.99 for a 22 Qt bag)--New York Product--
Moo ( bags of 34 Qt for $3.29)--a Vermont product.
Go organic, you won't regret it!

Where do you get the organic soil? Also, what do you fertilize the soil with...just MooDoo?

Yep, it was in Oswego.
They also had organic soil at Walmart.

Both McEnroe & Moo products can be found in many nurseries (around Albany anyway), and even Agway type of stores.. Co-ops often carry McEnroe.

I am not big on fertilizer, but I use fish emulsion and kelp products mostly for pots and flower beds, as well as worm castings whenever I can get some. In the vegetable garden, I use 'pro-gro'. I do cover the beds with chopped leaves in the fall, and this is great for plants.

While browsing the potting soils available I noticed in small print on one of Scott's brand, that if you go to their web site you can get info on the "metals" contained within. Haven't had a chance to check it out, but I suspect these are not good things you would want to be putting your fingers or plants in to.

You can mix your own potting soil that will be better and cheaper than miracle grow. I buy a bag of topsoil, the 40 lb bag which costs about $2.50. Add peat moss, bone meal and dried manure. Toss in some compost if you have it, and you will have a natural, organic soil that will grow as well or better than miracle grow. You can buy the dried manure by the bag, or, be even more economical and get it from a local farm (its free if you do that, but you have to shovel it yourself. Be careful to get the older manure, never fresh)

If anyone needs some old, rotted manure for free, I can show you to my old workplace..it's FULL of bullpoo.
