Growing bay tree

Hi all, I have a small bay leef tree (about 8-10") that I bought on an impulse without thinking much. I guess that it was grown in Canada made me feel like I could plant it here. Aparently, it is hardy to zone 8! Is there any way to grow it in the soil here in the Capital Region? I am a novice - what will I need to attempt to winter it?
