I doubt that it will do well. It is native to rather humid climates - coastal PNW and sections of the northern Rockies. From the US Forest Service: "Western hemlock thrives in a mild, humid climate where frequent fog and precipitation occur during the growing season. Best stands are in the humid and superhumid coastal regions. In subhumid regions with relatively dry growing seasons, western hemlock is confined primarily to northerly aspects, moist stream bottoms, or seepage sites." I would imagine even northern Utah is simply too arid for this tree to thrive.

Also, the Sunset Western Garden book lists it as unsuitable in your area.

It's going to be beneath a canopy from a couple deciduous trees in the hotter dryer months. I can give it plenty of water including misting, at least while its smaller.

If I went by Sunset I wouldn't have half the plants in my yard. :)

Actually Sunset does show it as suitable where I live. I have the app version of their book on my iPad and it shows me being in 3A. They show this tree being hardy in A2, A3, 2-7 and 14-17.

Update: The original one I planted looks fine but it only grew a few needles last year and didn't put on any height at all. I've since read from a couple sources that if you plant them when they are much bigger than 20" they won't grow much at all for several years.

Last summer I bought 3 small ones about 10" or 12". I'll let you know how they do when growing season kicks in.
