I have mine in a 10 gallon Rubbermaid (grey) with a cover! My hubby punched some holes in the sides and in some PVC tubing (with more holes) and I have two tubes running thru the tub so the works get aerated. (send me an email addy and I'll shoot you a picture - but I have to take the picture!)
Underneath, I have one of those aluminum trays that you can get for under $1.00 - those oven liners? Just as long as you don't overflow it's good to catch a few leaks. Oh, under that I have some scrap PVC so the bottom doesn't sit flat since there are holes on the bottom too.

But it sounds like you might need something bigger than a 10 gallon - I'm a family of two and the worms and us humans keep up with each other in the scrap department but you probably produce a lot more veggie/kitchen scraps since you folks are vegetarians.

yes a plastic tub works well and is less fuss and management - a 17 gal rubbermaid should keep up with 4

I have the COW and I really like it. Check your local waste management company and see if they have worm bins available. I was able to get my COW completely free from the WM here, and I think that there are more and more areas that have free bins available in order to get people more consciously involved in recycling and composting.

Our county is promoting all kinds of recycling because our main landfill only has two more years from some sort of extension! This year was supposed to be the last - and nothing about vermicomposting! I don't toss any kitchen non-meat/dairy scraps in the trash anymore!

A free COW. . . I'm amazed. They are really pricey here. I'd go that route if it were free!
