I seem to have trouble getting the right moisture. I 'cleaned' out my worm tower, and found all my worms in the thick black sludge on the very bottom tray, instead of the shredded paper/coffee grounds/food waste in the tray above. I have the 'sludge' tray outside in the sun to try and encourage the worms down into the tray below.

How do people prevent the sludge? It didn't smell, it was just very wet. The worms are not that active, but they're good size, and lots of babies and worms of all sizes, but why do they prefer that stuff? I'm hoping it'll dry out. I never seem to get the crumbly castings...I don't add extra water, just the waste. Should I add more shredded paper with the food and mix it up a little everytime?
