Worm Poop - The Other Black Gold!

Hi Everyone,

Treehugger.com is having a contest on how people reduce their carbon footprint, so I did a little video entry on my vermicompost project. I thought you might like to check it out. I put the link at the bottom of the page.

Hope you like it - please be merciful! Its amazing how many people dont know about vermicomposting or composting in general as an easy way to minimize one's trash output.

Thanks a bunch for the kind words! One of my friends who had no idea about vermicomposting got so excited by the concept, he's already come over to get some of my worms and started his own bin. I had no idea people would be so fascinated by worms eating their rubbish! I figured they would be grossed out.

    Roya!

Great video and good luck with the voting! You've got my vote and how I envy you and your family being able to compost year round out-of-doors. It was -3 below zero here just outside of Syracuse NY this morning. Our average temp should be a whopping +40F.

So much for those who don't believe in making the effort like you and others. (We) are so sadly such a minority.

I vemicompost indoors thru the Winter and have 2 outdoor plastic and one open bin waiting for Spring.

    Again Good Luck!

    Roya!

I hope you don't mind as I should have pasted the below image with my "Good Luck" message. You might still get a kick out of it as to (my envy).

The mounds aren't burial sites. They're compost piles ready to be spread in the Vegetable Garden and for the flowers we grow.

The fence in the background measures to 7' high and the snow on the ground was just over 33" when this image was taken on 2/16/07 and there still is 30" yet to melt.

But truly our Winters really are more beautiful than one sometimes could imagine as the image below the mounds depicts. That image was our first heavy 6" snowfall taken as the sun had already set with another almost 100" to folllow over the next few weeks.

Hope you didn't mind my sending this add on!

    Roya,

Great Job!! You should be proud! And your efforts are amazing! I would love to get down to a bag a week! I'm very curious about your outdoor bin set up!! I'm doing the indoor rubber maid thing, and it's getting old, I'd love to move the darlings outside like you have them! The bin seems pretty high, is that all poo, with new food on top?

Great job again on the vid! Hope you win!

    hi cats39 & bobbi!
Thanks for the wonderful encouragement! and i worried people would be annoyed i didnt have a proper vermicomposter....

i cant imagine how much i would worry if i had my bin outside in the snow! but the view sure is pretty.

as for my bin - its definitely a hybrid setup - i came up with it before i realized there were guidelines about these things. it is a regular compost bin i started with a heap of dirt, some fresh lawn clippings and dried leaves. i mixed it up and added some red wrigglers. i knew they were in there, and i knew compost gets hot, so in order to keep them from steaming to death, i piled the compost opposite the normal way - i piled it up the sides of the bin instead into a mountain in the center of the bin. and i never add too much green in order to keep it cooler. i dig down about 10 inches and add my food scraps and cover it up loosely with dirt to discourage flies. now, it's about 2 feet of finished compost, so when i do add leaves or green clippings the worms have enough compost below that to dig down into and stay cool.

and yes, it seems the stuff at the bottom of the bin is quite a bit of worm castings. when i took a closeup pic of it (its the closing pic on my video) i could see lots of poops - worm, pillbug, whatnot...so i try to harvest i try to get it from the bottom so the poop content doesnt get uncomfortable for them.

    best regards,
    roya
