blending the food down to a slurry is really not necessary. Perhaps nice for the first feeding since it lets the bacteria at it quicker but really not worth the extra effort for the long term.

Slurries can heat up. I always chop mine first, either manually or in a food processor....just chopped; not to a paste. Then freeze.

It's definitely not necessary to puree. You are doing the worms' work for them! Besides, if you add a mixture of kitchen scraps, some will begin to decompose faster than others, and when the worms are finished with those, they can start to work on the slower decomposing stuff. At least that's my theory. Sometimes I set my kit scraps in the sun just to give them a head start, but I would never take time to even chop.

Congratulations on a successful start for your bin. What did you use for bedding?

Bedding is shredded paper, cardboard & 1 year old shredded leaves, all mixed together, soaked & drained. Then a small amount of garden soil. Even after squeezing moisture out, it still seemed a little wet, so I dug down & put dry shredded paper on the very bottom to absorb the extra moisture.

Freezing, unless you have the space and your food supply is greater than the demand, is also unnecessary. What I do is I usually let it sit out in the backyard in a sealed bucket for a week or two before I dump it in the bin.

Also, if you are able to do it, a vermicomposting system in conjunction with Black soldier fly larvae works miracles. For the longest time, when my bin was just starting out, the food was just sitting there, but after I grabbed a handful of BSFL from my backyard hot compost and stuck it in my bin, it was like steroids for worms. The food supply that was there for months was almost gone in a week or two, and the worm population exploded

Oh, somehow in my mind I thought that BSFs are bad for a bin so when I found some on the bedding, I used to pinch them.

BSFL might be indicative of bad conditions like wetness or anaerobic conditions in your bin, but the larvae itself are miracle workers. They'll eat absolutely anything at a voracious pace and their droppings are like steroids for worms
