I have a bag of castings in a ziplock bag in my desk. Occasionally I will pull it out to "show" someone what castings actually is (one of the great mysteries when starting out).

To make a long story short, after not bothering the bag for about a month or two, it sat in a lower drawer of the desk. Yesterday, I pulled it out and noticed a quick flash of movement within the bag-- Yes, worms. Real ones. Red Ones.

No air holes, no feed stock, 100% (maybe 99%) "toxic" castings, no water added, no surface area, no pH tests, no outside influence. In a small half full sandwich bag of castings, I have 8 worms from a renegade cocoon(s).

So much for the importance of doing it "right".
