Some tiny local papers have a neighbor to neighbor column where people can ask questions. Post listing your town and somebody very nearby might share. That is a very good way to get worms because they probably will share methods that work in your weather area and local sources for bedding or feed. I'm sure they would like to hear in a few months how their babies are doing. The stress on the worms is much less than mail.

I too am looking for local worm farmers, in the Southern Indianda area. Periodically I submit an artical to freecycle forums seeking local people interested in swapping scions, gardening etc.

I found my 'starter' worms on Craigslist. Do a search for red wigglers or compost worms. They are usually listed under Farm and Garden. I didn't have any luck at all on Freecycle.
If you are just looking to get started you could probably find some freebie worms at a local horse or cow facility - just dig around a couple of the aged manure piles this spring. Or if you have a friend with a compost heap you could do the same thing . . .
