Colour of vermicompost

My previous few batches of finished vermicompost have been a nice black colour with specks of white from the crushed eggshells and they look very nice.

My latest batch however, is a grey colour. I have not changed anything about this batch. I always use shredded office paper as bedding (and my office has not switched brands of paper recently. The food is the same kitchen scraps as always, we have the same diet and eat the same veggies. I can't figure out anything different about this batch, but the colour is this dingy grey.

Anybody know why?

Anytime this is mentioned on forums, it's usually offered that the food has been changed. Since this isn't your case, I wonder what it could be as well. I'm like you, just feed them food scraps. I don't have any bunny poo or anything else to feed them.

My mites are back again :( I'm so disappointed.

You seem to have a mite curse. Nothing has worked for you, has it?

Hamilton, different batches of compost will have slightly different moisture contents which will affect the "look" (or color/darkness) of the batch. If you would add some moisture to that lighter colored batch, I'm sure it would darken it closer to black. Even though we THINK we are adding the same food stuff to the bin, ALL foods very in moisture content.

It could also be that you have added slightly more paper to the mix (or you worms have started specialising in paper ;) and thus the VC contains more paper and has a different colour.
