How about hops?

I've got a weird condition on my lot where there is water just below the bermuda grass all the time. All you have to do in my area is dig a hole, and it fills up with clear water. The city has been trying to find the cause, and I think they now believe we have several natural springs in this area of the sub-division, although they are suspicious of a nearby pond. Several of the trees planted by the developer (Ryland) have died. I suspect root rot. I've put in a little mixed orchard on a slope with good drainage, and I'm hoping the trees can take. Is there a way to find out what plants can tolerate a high water table? In California, I used to grow hops (in sandy soil)that climb up clothes line I would string across two poles. Of course, they needed lots of water, but not on the leaves, or they would mildew badly. Anybody grow hops out here in Texas? They grow amazingly fast, and they are very pretty and fragrant when the cones develop.
