I would think that the cornmeal would have to start decomposing before the worms will find it attractive and start moving towards it. Therefore I think you would have to wet it and wait for it to decompose before you have any hope of catching worms.

What you really need is a one way worm filter/valve. That is, worms go through one way but not back. I have no idea on how to construct such a thing except maybe like (similar to) a fly trap.

Thanks for your response, this is what I thought also. I have a small 5 gallon size bin about 1/3 to 1/2 full of nearly debris free compost, but I see eggs and little worms, so I will let them work away on that since I won't use this stuff till spring (May/June), then sift through and see what I can safely transfer to the new bin. I've read good things about burlap, maybe I'll have to find me some of that.
