I am new at this composting thing. I almost gave up on my first bin because of an acidic smell and fruit flies. I kinda put the bin off for a while because I really didn't want to deal with the mess. Then I decided to finally dump it out and to my surprise there were maggots in my bin. The strange thing was that there weren't any fruit flies at all, the acidic smell was gone, and everything was well decomposed and hot. I freaked out even more because "oh boy, now there are worms in here that don't belong." I quickly looked it up on the internet and found out the benefits of wild BSF larvae in the bin. So I pput everything back in the bin and went to bed. In the morning I decided that I would then give the larvae something to eat since they were doing such a fantastic job and wanted to keep them there. There was not any worms wiggling around. There were approximately 30 to 50 worms maybe more in the pile and then over night there was nothing. Only a few worms that were not moving much. What happened to my larvae? Will they come back? What did I do wrong? Someone please help.
