I would suggest adding more dry bedding and no food-- for about two weeks --to the kitchen waste bin.

The other bin? I would not try to do a dog poop bin if someone paid me! I have seen interesting info on them though, but I forget where. I believe one way to do them is a buried bin, you dig a big deep hole and put down a sort of a cage like thing, into it goes bedding and the dog waste and one doesn't pull the cage up for several months. I may have dreamt all this though.
You'd need more land than I have.

How many worms did you start out with in each bin? And are you only using one tray in each of the bins?

Sometimes it's hard to find the worms, they don't really want to be found. Did you notice the disappearance of the worms overnight, or had it been awhile since you last saw them?

As for the mites, I, have also had my dealings with them--it's very disturbing the first time you see them. When your bin dries out, their numbers will decline. I still have them in mine, but not an overwhelming number, and I don't think the worms mind.

As I read my follow-up, I'm not sure if I really answered any of your questions/concerns...but it would be helpful knowing how many worms you started out with.

Hi! Thanks for your input. I started with 1 lb. of worms in each bin. The poo bin is just a single bin and the kitchen compost bin is a 5 tier bin and I'm only using one tier to start (that's what I thought I was supposed to do. I'm seeing little tiny white worms in both of the bins, but I think those are different critters. The worms I do see are less than 2 inches long. The original worms were very skinny but much longer. I admit it didn't seem like there were 1000 worms in each lb., but seriously, I'm lucky to see more than 3 or 4 worms if I turn the whole bin. I'm seriously considering just starting over. The poo bin is quite a bit drier than the kitchen waste bin, but still has as many mites. I'm getting concerned about fruit flies and white flies as well. Seems to be a profusion!
