I wish I could help you out on the worms. I too am recovering from most of my worms dying during the Winter in my above-freezing-but-not-heated garage.I allowed things to get too wet and didn't really have the right bedding for the worms. I was using one inch strips from corrugated cardboard boxes. Which were OK for them to eat but they didn't really want to mate and reproduce in that bedding. As my whole colony was on it's last legs, I turned for help from my outside-in-the-snow-frozen-solid compost bin in which there had been many worms in the fall.
With the loss of my colony (herd?) I went to see if there were any worms that survived the freezing temperatures. At the bottom of the compost pile there was a ball of compost that was not frozen. Perhaps their body heat or some chemical they excrete keeps the surrounding compost from freezing. Perhaps they just keep retreating to the last unfrozen place in the compost pile.
Anyway, I passed some of that fine compost that they were in through a screen of 1/4 inch hardware cloth and the resulting fine compost made just the bedding the worms liked. I took half of the rotting foodwaste out of each tray and threw it into the compost bin. I filled the empty half with the fine compost bedding. Soon the estimated quarter pound of worms that I still had alive were breeding up a storm. I love to see all the worms lying on top of the WF trays scurry for cover when I take of the tray above. I think my hardy stock is going to recover.
Good luck with your own worm exploits. It sounds like you have some beautiful plants to offer in exchange for worms.
