Cutting worms in halves...

So I was talking to someone about my purchase of red wrigglers to start a vermicomposting bin; I said how much I paid for the little worms that I received; and got laughed at because I could've just cut all my worms in halves to double the population...or even triple the population if I cut into 3 segments.

Not knowing whether this is myth or what, I looked for more info on the net, and found different opinions. Some say only the head end will regenerate while the tail end will die off; but there are also articles that states both ends will regenerate (into 2 different worms)? What are your thoughts? I'm not going to cut my worms, but I just really don't like being laughed at.
