Hyacinth bean vine is not a trailing sort. It's a twining vine and will climb to reach the sun no matter where you put it. If you put it on the deck and expect it to go down (even without support), you'll be fighting it's natural tendencies. I think it'd be likely to curl up on itself in an attempt to climb up out of the pot. Might not be too attractive that way. My MIL had one that fanned out over the ground because it was far away from the deck rail, but it put on only enough growth to make it to the rail and grow up. I have seen some types of Morning Glory vines in hanging pots (I think I was at the Mercer sale), but I'm not sure as to the variety. Sweet potato vine is great as a trailing vine out of pots, though..both the chartreuse one and the varigated (although I find the variegated one to be less vigorous).

Hyacinth Bean is beautiful, but I agree with srburk but I've never tried it that way.

I would like to make a suggestion to try instead. In 2004 I tried a nasturtium called "Jewel of Africa". I got the seeds from Thompson & Morgan. It was listed as a climber to 8 ft. and good for baskets and a ground cover. Well I was very disappointed as far as a climber--You would have to run out everyday and tie it up.I was very impressed with the vigor of this vine and wished I had a wall or something that it could trail over. It has very variegated foliage and a a range of flower colors from cream to yellow to orange and burgundy. I wish that I had a place for this especially because I tend to like the cooler colors,but I was really impressed with this vine and thought maybe you might try it. Just a thought!!

Yes I agree with the nasturtiums. I already have some of those that will be going in baskets. Looks like I will be building an arch or something to use up some of the seeds I have traded for. Trading is addicting, and then you have to try and find some place to plant everything!!
