Retaining wall vine

Hello--first time at the vine forum. I would like a vine for a retaining wall. The wall is keystone concrete, about 4 feet high. The bottom of the wall joins an asphalt driveway and there is a planting bed at the top of the wall that is about 4 feet wide. It has a west exposure with some dappled shade in the afternoon. The asphalt driveway makes it a hot spot in July. We usually have good snow cover, however, not this year and it is zone 4. Also have somewhat naturally acidic soil. Is there a vine that can be planted at the top of the wall and trained to grow down, or do I have to go chop a hole in the asphalt for something to grow up? (This done at midnight so DH won't know it was me.) I tried strawberries on the wall the last couple of years and although the runners sounded good, they would not stay hanging over the side. Somehow they always managed to work themselves back up to the top of the bed. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Andie
