Where do you live? Clematis Armandii works well for me anywhere on the west coast: Seattle, Portland, San Francisco, San Jose: I work my way south :)

But our climate out here is mild, comparatively.

I like it because it looks handsome out of flower too whereas honeysuckles can be rather ratty out of flower, also sometimes in flower too but the scent totally makes up for that. However, somewhere I have to see all the time, I would prefer Mr. C. Armandii. I hide the honeysuckle on the backside of the gazebo so the neighbor must see it while I just get to enjoy the fragrance!

I live in Harrisburg PA, area 7a...I forgot to mention that the location that I want to use grown two nice azalea bushes that I prune every other year to keep around 5 feet and bloom woderfully every spring....this could give some indication about the amount of light that the vine could actually take...I was already biased about the armandii clematis, since the additional advantage of the scent...
