Freeform tree for vines......

Hi everyone,

I haven't posted here yet but Susan at the aroid forum said I should post my 'freeform tree trellis' here. It's been awhile since I've posted any pictures online so hopefully this will work :). I have quite a few vines and last year I planted a incense passion flower that attacked my house. So this year I decided to build me a 'tree trellis' for it. I really like how it came out and will make more for the rest of my vines.

I hope the link worked? I work with steel and concrete and am more then happy to share ideas. I'm just hoping that I get to actually keep some of the stuff I do this year it never seems to work out that way but I swore no orders this year lol...Anyway I have some other pictures at the link above I don't post everything I do because, well, a girls got to have some secrets :O). Have a great day everyone!

Anela, I ABSOLUTELY LOVE that! Would you share HOW YOU DID that? Thanks!

    Sure thing,

I bought 7 pieces of 10 ft. rebar. I kept about 2' of the rebar straight at the bottom (the trunk) to cement and bury in the ground. I just took each piece and put it in my bar bender and bent each one until I liked what it looked like. You can also bend using a tree, or fence post (if you don't have a bender) rebar is fairly easy to bend. To get the serpentine look just turn the rebar as you bend. Then I stood each piece up and welded the 'trunk' together. Then I put the 'tree' in a 1 gallon nursery pot and filled it with quickcrete cement and let it set up then buried the whole pot in the ground. I hope that made sense??

I am just so tired of the 2D flat common trellises out there and with these you can do just about any design. I plan on doing a palm tree and have some other designs in mind. I've been meaning to make some for over a year now and finally got the chance!! I'm glad you like it :O)

I prefer welding but if you don't have a welder you can always tie the rebar together with a strong wire. Since the rebar will be in concrete tieing it should be fine. You could even use heavy clamps to hold the 'trunk' together while pouring the concrete and letting it set up.

Also, you have to paint the part of the rebar that will be in concrete as the rust will cause the rete to 'explode' over time. It's really not a hard sculpture at all! Go for it :).

    I think that covered everything....

WOW, magnificent! I make copper pipe trellises and I wonder if I could duplicate something like that by using coiled pipe. Will cost a fortune though. Don't mind me... just musing to myself. But that's a beautiful piece of garden sculpture!

    Hgalindo,
Actually, yes you could do that! I thought about using copper or even slipping the coil over the rebar. But like you said the price would be high. Thanks :)
