Vermicomposting

New worm bed.

I'm sure it's here somewhere but can't find. Should my worm bed be ready before worms arrive? If so, how long before should it be set up? Thanks. Mary

Definitely. I would recommend you get the bin ready at least a weeek before the worms arrive. By then the bedding will be evenly moist and the leftovers, peelings, kitchen scraps, etc. will be starting to break down.
From what I've read on this forum there are people who don't do that, and I don't think their worms die even if they don't have a bin already established. But worms don't like anything too fresh. Well, maybe if it's cantaloupe...

I have my bin set up with each harvest as well. I freeze all my food, so I just plop a frozen bag of food in the bin, and when it thaws, it adds extra moisture to the bedding (and flavour)! I don't do this a week beforehand, as the food has already broken down. But a couple days for sure.
