My blue bins never seem to get too dry. I've never added water. Is that because I add so much moisture with coffee grounds, tea bags and veggies?
I think clear bins would work. I experimented with clear plastic jars in a dark room. They did fine. I enjoyed seeing what was going on when I turned the light on. Of course they did migrate to the middle when there was light, but not before I could get a good look.
If they were capable of it, they might have been thinking, Darn, here's this woman again with that dang light!

you could use clear containers but theyll be happier if the light doesnt get in and Id imagine they will avoid the edges. you could also wrap something around it to keep the light out or keep it in a dark room but I personally wouldnt use clear containers if they are going to be somewhere bright.

I have two small clear (plastic) bins for some of my worms. (Clear was not my first choice -- it was all I could find when I needed to start new bins).

I keep both bins in the kitchen, on top of the refrigerator. Sometimes, when I add new food to the bins, some of the food is up against the side of the plastic, and I can easily see it through the bins. It's cool, because I can easily see when that food is gone.

Contrary to what I expected, using clear bins hasn't been a problem, and the worms are doing very well. They are fat, healthy, and I assume happy.

I seldom see them through the clear plastic, because they are in the middle of the bin. I do sometimes see them on or at the sides of the bin when I turn the lights on in the kitchen, but they move further into the bin fairly quickly.

I have noticed a LOT of worm trails in the slight condensation that forms on the sides of the bin--evidence that they do come to the sides at night when it's dark--but I haven't had any escapees.

So to answer your question, I think the worms are smart enough to stay away from the edges of a clear bin, and it's been my (rather surprising) experience that the clear bins are not a problem.

Clear bins will not hurt the worms but will be an inefficent use of space as they will not go near the clear edges during the time when there is light around the box. You need as much space as you can get for the worms to feed in. Why waste any with clear sides?

Yes, you can use clear bins...we use a rather large clear plastic storage bin similar to the rubbermaid blue bins, we use sterlite brand.

Our worm farm is indoors and our lights in our home are compact florescent. At any time during the day or night lights on or off, we see our worms through the sides of the bins, they mostly stay around the edges and yes, we see the condensation and worm holes/trails. Unless we shine an led flashlight directly into the sides of the bin, the worms don't move. Indoor lighting is in no way as powerful or damaging as the sun. This is why people who stay indoors, whether lights are on or off, are at risk of developing rickets. Indoor lighting is just not sufficient enough and the worms don't seem to notice whether the lights are on or off. The only time they run away from light is like I said, if we shine a very bright light directly on them. The clear bins offer a visual advantage to the opaque, but use what you like, just the letting you know from experience that the clear bins work extremely well.
