I'll say you can put it in a ziplock, almost closed completely, then put it on the patio, deck, whatever, for a day or two and ... POOF, there you go, ROT, rotten food. No Benjamin Franklin involved.

I use a Folgers aroma-seal coffee can. Much easier to work with than a ziplock bag and effectively keeps out bugs and keeps in smells. It stands up on its own, has a wide mouth and a very easy to grab built-in handle. I call it my "oop" bucket... don't ask me how we came up with that name as kids. Anyway, either the worms get it or it goes into the garden or compost pile.

I've switched to tea, but I get them from work where the coffee drinkers go through 3 or 4 a week. They last forever. When mine get too icky, I recycle them and get a new one.

The only downside is that I happen to keep it in the cabinet with the real coffee and tea... Mom went to make coffee at my house one day and got a real surprise. :)

I use a 4 quart translucent plastic container with a bunch of small holes in the lid. It sits on the kitchen cupboard right next to the sink. No smell. If there were, I'd hear about it in short order. No flies or ants or anything. It fills up in 4 or 5 days then goes either to the COWs in the basement or outside to the compost bins. I don't freeze or pulverize anything.

I use a gallon plastic ice-cream container as a holding bucket for kitchen waste, but I would not call it pre-composting. My outside compost bin is actively composting and I have been pulling a gallon or so at at time to put into my various bins. By precomposting I think of stuff that might be ready to spread on the ground in another few weeks in a hot compost pile.

I also use the aroma-seal coffee container, but I freeze my scraps too. My only thought on that is that my freezer is already running and so I'm not using any extra electricity. I do cut up my scraps or my kids use my Slap Chop(as seen on TV) and they love it! But I don't use a blender or anything like that.

My scraps go in a 5 gallon "slop " bucket which, like my worms, stays outside. I add cardboard , smash and mix with a shovel, and feed the herd with it about once a week.
