ivy on 4x4 posts

i want to grow some ivy (i think it is english) on the 4x4 post of a porch swing frame in my back yard. do i need to put anything on the post (fishing line etc) for the ivy to attach itself or will it do that on its own? it is painted white and i want the ivy to cover it up the sides and across the top. thanks
