Presumably you're looking for a native vine given the context? Does Virginia creeper survive there?

I don't think Virginia Creeper is going to get very far in Alaska zn 4. If nothing else I suspect blooming would be late and spotty.

This guy rates Lonicera 'Mandarin' as hardy to zn 3, which surprises me a bit but it's interesting to know.

BTW, are you sure about your zone? I thought the coastal, "temperate rainforest" parts were zn 6 or even 7 in parts. (Zn 4 would not be considered temperate). That would expand your palette considerably.

Hi davidrt28. Interesting you should mention VC blooming as a criterion for choosing it or not. Here it rarely blooms and when it does it's late in the season. I've rarely ever seen berries here. We just grow it for the foliage.

alaskanamazon, I'm a bit surprised you'd consider non-native plants for a wildlife refuge. Natives would have far greater wildlife value as food and shelter.

Blooming isn't a concern. We just need foliage that covers these walls, flowers would be an added bonus :)

Well first of all there simply are no native plants that can be used for this purpose. Second, it's at the visitor center and gift shop, not the actual wildlife areas.

So any vine that is vigorous and hardy to zone 6 could be used.

Ivy will do the trick, I bet. Just be forewarned that once it is established it will cover the entire state of Alaska if not kept in check. I definitely requires a lot of "beating back"., but it is green all year. Wish I could send you mine.

Hey there, I think a couple shoots of Clematis Ligusticfolia var ligusticfolia (common name 'Western White Clematis') will set you right up.

It grows bushy and huge, climbs easily, covers itself in sweet-scented white blooms that turn to fluffy seed heads that will stay through the winter, it's fine in full sun (or part sun, or shade, or anywhere, really), it's hardy in USDA zones 4-8, is disease resistant and likes moisture (it usually grows near stream beds and such). AND it's a North America native plant!
