I've read these methods with great interest, and would like to experiment, but thought I'd get a year of practice in 'the basics' first. If you do try them, please post your results, with pictures!

I'm also just starting out (January this year), and had quite a learning curve up to now. From feeding, to getting ants out of the bins, from dealing with cold temperatures, to combating fruit flies. Everyday there has been something new. But I can see a lot of little worms, and lots of worm castings. I therefore must have created favourable conditions for the worms.

So soon, the time will come to add more bins. That is why I'm so interested of fellow wormer's experience with the Burrow methods.

Hi to the both of you! Let me try to give you some info to try instead of trying with worms already breeding. The "secreat" is in the worms being hatched in his soil mixture. So if you start with cocoons and grow them to breeding size (age) in the bedding that is more dense than normal in a composting bin by using a mixture of actual soil and vermicompost you will get a jump start on the experiment. Harvest your worms all you can find from about .5 gal (2 leters)of mostly finished vermicompost and screen some soil through 1/8 screen and mix. The cocoons can be left in the compost or if you wanted a count then pick them out of the vermicompost. You probibly will not find all of them even if you are careful. you only want a close count anyhow to give the avg hatching of original cocoons. then continue the exp and note the worm size and numbers. Thats what its all about.

I'll admit my interest in "the burrow method" is purely academic - I have no use for tiny worms, I'm just interested to know if they would actually do what the site describes.

One day, when I'm no longer renting, I hope to have a large scale year-round worm bed and give the suckers away to everyone that will listen, so reading about what highly stable, very deep beds might do is interesting.
