What zone or part of CA are you in? And what is the location of the wall (shady, sunny, faces what direction)? That info will really help for recommendations.

I've got a south facing cinderblock wall that gets tons of sun. I grow Sweet Peas, Morning Glories, Moon Flower Vine, and Passion Flower Vine there. I did have to rig up a make-shift trellis, as these vines twist around objects to climb, they don't adhere to a surface like ivy and some other vines.

Every 8ft or so on my wall is block "column" that pokes out a couple inches from the main wall face. To those columns I attached (using a drill and mortar screws) green plastic covered metal fencing (it's bendable and sold in large rolls at box/hardware stores). This allowed the fencing to hang a few inches from the actual wall-face allowing space for the vines to twist their way up and around the wire fence material.

It works great, I actually got the idea from the 'net where a guy used this technique to grow climbing roses to great effect over the face of his house.

I'm in the West LA area, z9. The walls face east and south the east one gets less sun than the south wall due to the fact that there are 25 foot frees shooting straight up against that wall on the adjacent property. I thank you for your suggestions, those already and those you might have now. I'll look into your idea and see what I can do to ready a drill or something like that, as that to me is better than purchasing wooden trellises.
