Problem mandevilla & Moonflower

Howdy all!

I have a 2nd year mandevilla that grew and flowered beautifully last year. It overwintered in the garage -we have lots of sunny winter days and I often carted plants out to enjoy the warm driveway.

It seemed crowded, so I repotted it into a tall clay pot along with some mossrose to keep it company and to add drapey grace.

It is out in the full sun and I water it well, thinking that the clay is porous and loses water. It is growing and flowering, but the leaves are dull and starting to yellow. I gave it liquid MiracleGro, just like the others.

What would cause it to be unhappy now?

Next is the semi-twin moonflower. Started from seed, grew well last summer, cut it back and overwintered just like the mandevilla. Kept the original pot, put it out in the sun and water & feed regularly. This year's growth is explosive. It is easily 5 times the size of the mandevilla, the leaves are huge, deep green and glossy, vines are everywhere.

BUT, no flowers. No buds. Why, oh why? Why so much healthier than the mandevilla (is it the new pot?) but no flowers? And, last year the flowers had no fragrance. Everyone says moonflowers have fragrance, but I havent smelt any.

Whatcha think?

rockyn - The Miracle Grow may have enough Nitrogen in it to stimulate the lush foliage growth, but excessive Nitrogen can cause delayed flowering...A phosphorus based bloom booster can sometimes overide the delayed flowering effects of any excessive Nitrogen levels..the Phosphorus WILL NOT cause excessive foliage growth or delay flowering...Phosphorus is bloom stimulating..

The fragrance in the Ipomoea alba seems to be based on a mixture of the exact strain and the particular environmental conditions that the plant is grown out in i.e.e.g.,a combination of heat and humidity factors combined with soil chemistry particulars can add up to a 'formula' that equates to fragrance or no fragrance..the exact particulars of this formula remain unsolved...try some different strains and see if you can find one that is fragrant for you..a strain that is fragrant for someone in a area close to you, would tend to be fragrant for you also...

    Hope that helps...

P.S. you may also want to give the Ipomoea albivenia, the fragrant African Moonvine "Umangfongo" a try...

rockyn - the mandie vines come from rhizomes and I expect too much water or soil that doesn't drain well might be detremental. They will droop a bit when thirsty. I know it's been hot down that way but since you repotted, you may have to experiment a little to see at what point it really needs water. Sometimes if the air is too dry (irrespective of watering), they can attract spider mites and the leaves will yellow and drop. I had one for about 8 years in a pot before it bit the dust last year after contracting mealies. UGH. They are pretty tough vines though and I usually gave mine some bulb fertilizer (which is higher phosphorus).

Thank you both for this information.

I will definitely check out the phosphorus fertilizer. (wishing I had read this before fertilizing yesterday!)

I also plan to move the mandevilla back to the slightly less sunny area that it enjoyed last year. The moonflower seems to soak up as much sun and heat as Texas can dish out, but the mande might not be as tough....

Who woulda thunk I could overwater a clay pot?

I also have a Mandevilla that is not doing well. But it is just not growing at all. It is planted close to the house. I kept it covered during the freezes and it did come back in the spring. But the growth rate has been extremely slow. I don't like to fertilize at all if I can help it, but I finally gave it some food last week. Nothing. The Bush vine shot up...but there aren't even any new leaves on the Mandevilla. What else can I do to make it grow?

maden_theshade - give it some time. I am not sure where you live but they like sun and warmth. If you are in a hot zone 8, it'll take off. If in a cool zone 8, it may be slower to get going but should do okay.
