Okay, you ready for it?

DO NOTHING.

Yes, you read correctly, the easiest way to increase the production of your worm bin is to do nothing. AND, since I can't control temperature and atmospheric pressure, it's been my most effective tweak so far.

When I began my venture into vermicomposting, I BURIED myself in literature. I read so many back-posts on this forum, I could probably recite them by memory. Amidst all the layering, watering, feeding, temperature, and bin maintenance info, giving the worms TIME to use their God-given talent was the last thing on my mind.

I decided to change all that over the weekend. My bin activity had been a tad slow up until this point, and I had a feeling that all the overprotective poking and prodding that had become my daily ritual was much more comforting for me than for my worms. So after a well-deserved Thursday feeding, I gave my little guys a 3-day break from my curiosity. Alas, when I checked my bin this morning, I found Thursday's addition was absolutely DEMOLISHED. Barely a shred of food to be found, but little yellow orbs of happiness were EVERYWHERE. Eggs, eggs, and more eggs! I have no doubt that giving my little buddies the weekend off was the impetus for this rampant outburst of feeding and copulation.

The worms have spoken! My daily excavations are now obsolete. Egg formation, especially in such volume, lets me know my little guys are happy and in this thing for the long haul. From this point forward, I'll fight all my impulses to go bin-digging more frequently than once per feeding, and I'll allow father time and mother nature to work their respective magics.

I should mention that I built an in-ground bin outdoors that is relatively maintenance-free. Those of you with indoor bins, may need to check more often.

Regardless of your set-up, if you are the same type of ultra-neurotic daily bin-peeper that I used to be, relax. Sip a chilled coffee, kick back, and let your worms do what they do best, uninterrupted. Watch what happens.
