Yep I used to buy them all the time from neighbor kids to go fishing ::grins::. All kinds of worms are sold under alot of different names and for different reasons.

I have bought worms specifically to put in my gardens to help break up the compact soil. In such a case i do want a more common earthworm or canadian nightcrawler. Coffee grounds are great for the garden and food stuffs add OM (another great thing for a garden).

I have no idea what OSH is but from the limited information you provided it really could be any type of worm she bought.

Wow, I didn't know OSH (Orchard Supply Hardware) sold worms. I mean, the name of the store would make it seem obvious, but they are more like Home Depot. I was looking for some worms to start! I'm trying to find a local bait shop too.

Bought my first worms there a little over a year ago... Horrible pricing, but it fed that vermicomposting jones I had.

I was at OSH this afternoon to check it out. No species written on the container (they are in a fridge in the nursery department, along with a collection of other beneficial bugs). Price was $10.99 for about 200 worms. I'm guessing they are not red worms, but the ones for gardens.

I ordered some red worms for my composter that showed up today (yipee!) on the internet. it was lik $20 for one pound, which they say is about 1000...

I may actually get a batch of the OSH worms to put in my yard. The soil is very hard clay and could use some wormy help! But I'll wait until I can lay some mulch on the lawn first.

I have never heard of purchasing worms for the garden. everywhere I have read says the best way to get worms in your garden is to MULCH and compost with lots of greens. worms will come! if the OSH is selling them and directions state they will eat kitchen scraps in your garden, they must be nightcrawlers. the wigglers won't survive in the wild,without protection.Nightcrawlers won't survive in a bin. both have different area requirements.

If someone can sell it, and someone else will buy it .....

not saying its all bad. Ive not seen an area yet, that if not given some love and rotting OM, that does not eventually get more worms.

then again, my house is over-run with ladybugs, so the idea of buying them is silly to me ;-)
