Vermicomposting

Now that it has gotten warmer, we can buy mangos and I have been feeding the rind (cut to small pieces) to the worms and throw the pit in too for good measure. The outer skin tend to get leathery and the fleshy part gets really sticky.

Today I got a full box of over-ripe/rotten mangoes from a grocer. Wonder how I should best handle the feeding. I am sure the Hawaian vermicomposters know a trick or two. Thanks.

You know, I've read in a variety of posts that folks stick the pit in their bins. It must take FOREVER to breakdown.

I just put the peels and flesh in the bin but I FREEZE it first because of fruitflies. If the fruit is overripe and rotten, you might not want to handle it (eeewwww-factor) and just dump a few at a time in the bin or compost pile. I'd freeze them first unless they are really nasty!

About throwing the pit in the bin, it is so the worms et all can clean it up. Then I take it out of there and throw it in the garbage. I don't want them to germinate in my compost pile wasting the valuble nutrients
