It all depends the size of the trellis and your personal taste in flowers and plants. Most plants take at least 3 years to establish, depending what size plant you buy.
From what I've read Major Wheeler has a very long flowering period.
If you can bear all that red from mid-spring to frost then go for Major Wheeler.
However, if you like the clematis type flowers then you have more options in color and form, however a shorter flowering time, which you can play with by planting two types of clematis.
Another option can be planting climbing roses, but you have the thorns to consider (unless you get a thornless type, like Zephirine) and all the fun/complications which go with roses.
You can also consider planting annual vines, like a mixture of different morning glories.
