Aren't Bougainvillea's a vine

Of course you can maintain them in potted plants, but aren't they really considered as a vine? Aside from that, I just purchased 2 small ( 2 1'2 ) potted Bougie's. As I recall, once you have them outside absorbing the sun during the Summer and you bring them in late Fall, they almost always drop their leaves. Now coming from Loggee's green house, I assume the cuttings are coming from ideal conditions in their Greenhouse. Wouldn't they most likely drop their leaves as a shock? If this occurs, what should I do ...as far as sun and watering? BTW, one is the Barbra Kurst variety and the other is just known as California yellow.
