I know how you feel. Mine is a few years old and growing like crazy. But still no flowers. My mother told me it will take awhile but I am not sure how long. I am sure someone on here will be able to tell you.

I'm no wisteria expert as all the questions I've asked this forum recently will prove, but I do know that my wisteria, which is now 15 years old, took about 6 years to finally put out flowers. I had totally given up and was just happy with the great leaves, then one day I spotted a big purple thing hanging there and I just about fell over! Within a few weeks the vine was loaded and each year it's just gotten better. I didn't fertilize with anything except some cow poop, so maybe that was part of my problem? Or maybe your mom is right and you just have to be patient, but I know there are folks out there who will really know what's going on. I just wanted to give you a little bit of hope! Good luck.

I'm not a Wisteria expert either, but I can lay claim to having kick started my neighbours wisteria this year. From my experience, this is what I would do... and it'll take 3 steps, each of which must be strictly followed.

Step 1 - Do this now or very soon. Attack the wisteria hard and cut ALL the new long shoots you can see back to 6 buds. If you've not done this before, you might want to do this for some of the old ones as well.

Step 2 - After all the leaves have dropped off in the autumn. This is the time to look at the structure of the branches and shape them etc... Again as in step 1 cut ALL the new branches you want to keep back to 6 buds. don't be afraid to cut off branches that don't look right in the overall shape.

Step 3 - Very important to complete all the good work you've done in the first two steps and that is to go out in mid-February and cut ALL the new branches a further 3 buds back to just 3 buds in length.

Fingers crossed - In May you'll be treated to a display of flowers.
