I am also an apartment dweller with a rubbermaid style bin. I also use the migrate down method. I dump mine in a bucket and then organise the new bedding. Then I lay a sheet of the net that is used to screen windows against flys and dump the bucket on top of that, Then I leave it for a week, most of the worms go down by themselves, I find that if I furtle about amongst the old worm bedding, after letting it settle for a week, the stragglers soon decide to go down. I tried the migration up system but my worms would have nothing of it. When finished I rinse off the net and put it away for next time.

I don't understand the migrating up. Why would worms want to climb up, when it's so much easier for them to go down, away from light? I like trying different methods of harvesting. Next time I'm going to put some tasty food in an onion bag and see if it works easy, too.

the onion bag will work the same - fine - you can put it to one side of the bin barely below the surface after a few days or a week of no feeding - the worms will easily move in
