i'm so paniced that these crawly bugs are the bsf i've been reading about. I don't want them to kill off my huge herd. What if i dig off the top 2 inches? I have already added some dry newspaper and a sizable piece of cardboard not torn hoping to dry things up and have the lid off. Anything else? I just don't want to start over Arrrrhh!

Most critters in your bin are not going to hurt anything. I recall reading that mites are okay except for the red ones. BSF's also help with the composting process, and some people actually want them.
The link below shows some pictures and gives some info. You can find a lot more on the web if you want to research it. Also on this forum. Sounds like you've done the right thing by reducing the moisture.

It's really hard to know what you've got without a picture.

I've got a bunch of little tiny white bugs (they look more like dust) that, unless I'm mistaken, are just mites.

If they are small white dots, they're mites, and if they are very very skinny things, they're most likely pot worms. I get both periodically. They're harmless, but do show up when the bins are too moist, and the pot-worms are attracted to acidity.

I honestly don't know what I am adding to the bin that is acidic, but I've got pot worms in one of my bins now.
