diy bsfl

I want to start off by saying that I am not trying to undermine the makers of the Biopod. It looks as if the unit is very well made. I am one of the people that just can't afford one. I am wanting to know if anyone has any plans for a DIY BSFL self harvesting bin.

I have seen many plans for DIY stackable wormbins and that doesn't undermine the makers of the WormFactory and other such devices. It just allows people like me to raise worms. Some people that try DIY will buy later.

The BSF larva can climb an incline of 30 - 40 degrees (unlike other larva which CANNOT)
A self harvesting bin shouldn't be to hard to build. You might start with an outer large pail and then an inner one slightly smaller. Mark off a 35 degree ramp leading from the bottom of the smaller pail to the top. Cut away un-needed plastic and then fill the void with concrete smoothing to make a ramp about 1" wide.
You could use cement mix, or maybe plaster, or even wood to make the ramp. Anything that would stand up to the damp conditions of the bin. The ramp would lead to a hole at the top where they would fall into another pail.

Doesn't the ramp have to be smooth enough where the immature larvae can't climb it?

The immature larvae will stay in the food. Only when it's time for them to pupate do they crawl off in search of a secluded location.

    Here's a very cool design.

You had me all confused there. I thought it was a new post at first. Isn't that your really cool design? I was looking at it admiringly yesterday. Center drop design. Nice. I guess you have been working on your design since you first posted. The guy that sells biopods online has a BSF bucket composter v2.0 homemade. He shares and is fine with people making thier own to see if they like it before buying. A tilted 5 gallon bucket with a drain hole at the bottom of the tilt would seem to work. That is where I want to start to catch wild caught BSFL. If garden web had a forum for BSFL I would read it. That is the type of forum that would show interest here to start a new forum. I'm also game for reading 100 pages of posts about raising BSFL and Vermi together. I do not think that much on the topic is yet written. Would that be on the worm page? The BSFL page? Or a BSFL Vermi page?

Since you know about both maybe you could tell us a bit about the advantages of having voracious composters available to eat the August zuchinni who also keep the bin warmer into the winter and then disapear when the late winter garden gleanings are sparce. The space savings in the bins. The leaving good BSFL castings to keep the vermi well fed until the garden again has over ripe this or spoiled that.

    More posts please.

No, it's not my design. I just saw a design that I thought was really cool. So I posted a link to it here.

Here's a DIY design by Dr. Paul Olivier the designer of the original round BioPod

There's another DYI design at the Black Soldier Fly Blog. He also has a couple of 'how to' videos about this design.

"BSF seemed a lot cooler than worms" Heresy! I say. A rumble!

    LOL

Actually worms do great. BSFL do great. And together they do what the other can't. The BSFL keeping the bin warm in winter. When I get some, I'm going to need me a longer stick. Dump biochar on their little heads and it absorbs extra liquid, even especially putrid liquid. It makes homes for all the good little wee beasties. And we will find out if the worms say, "Look ma! Black poop!"
